Police should allow May 1 gathering - BERSIH 2.0

In a media statement, the non-governmental organization (NGO) said the police should not continue to use the 2012 Peaceful Assembly Act to stop a gathering.

“Labour Day is traditionally celebrated all over the world with gatherings and this is a freedom to gather as stated in the Federal Constitution which is the highest law in the country,” the statement read.

“The OCPD’s statement gives negative reflection to the country where democratic credibility seem to be on the decline with harassment and political pressure although the Prime Minister himself had once said that Malaysia has one of the best democracy in the world,” the NGO said.

BERSIH 2.0 urged the police to portray high commitment levels by allowing a peaceful gathering on May 1.

Meanwhile, about 30 people representing 12 NGOs had lodged a police report about 10am at Kemaman District police station, protesting against the rally organized by the Opposition.

The group calling themselves Kemaman Youth Movement Voice, is led by Umno Kemaman Youth vice-president Mohd Fauzi Mat Adam.

Mohd Fauzi said they are protesting against the gathering as it is illegal and did not comply with the Peaceful Assembly Act and urged the authorities to take stern action against the organiser if they continue to go ahead with the rally.

He also said that the Opposition should use the right channels in Parliament to voice dissatisfaction and not through illegal rallies.
