Pollution around Masjid Jamek (the Jamek Mosque) here will be tackled to ensure it does not jeopardise the historical significance and beauty of one of the oldest mosques in the country, said Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak.
He said the pollution was impacting the areas surrounding the mosque which is unique because it is located at the confluence of the Klang and Gombak rivers.
"Uncontrolled pollution has an effect on our rivers and the rapid development there has also diminished the attraction of the surrounding areas, now there are reports that it is not conducive to walk along the river banks," he said in a posting on his Facebook Sunday night.
Najib said in comparison, in cities like New York, Paris and in South Korea, the areas along rivers are alive with economic and recreational activities for tourists and families.
"All kinds of initiatives have been taken and more efforts must be made to restore this place.
"God willing, I will look into this matter soon," he said. --Bernama
