Major changes have occurred in the postal and courier industry that required all players to be fully prepared to face a very challenging decade.
Deputy Communications and Multimedia Minister Datuk Jailani Johari said with the increase in the household broadband penetration, lifestyle and business operating model are more focused on e-commerce, which required an efficient and inclusive e-fulfillment system.
He said the industry now required more complex ecosystem to cater for the needs of various customers.
He said the government has set up various initiatives launched by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak for the industry players which are included in the 11th Malaysia Plan, E-commerce Strategic Direction Plan and Free Digital Trade Zone Development.
"I hope that in our pursuit of progress, players in postal and courier industry will continue to use and strengthen the local workforce," he said during the closing of 'Arrive Safely Carnival Tournament 2016' held at the Bazarena, Stadium Melawati here Sunday.
Speaking to reporters after the ceremony, Johari said more than 40,000 members of postal and courier companies were plying the roads daily, representing the forefront of the industry as they went around delivering the postal items to customers across the country.
"They are the industry's 'unsung hero' as they carried out their duties and responsibilities come rain or shine with full commitment," he said.
On Sunday's programme, Johari said the carnival was organised by Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) aimed at reducing the road accidents rate and to elevate the job as drivers in the postal and courier industry to a professional career with high level of competency.
He said the courier companies's participation in the tournament, which was held for the third year, saw a 50 per cent increase from 10 entries last year to 15 this time.
