Power supply in Kuching, Sarawak's capital city and western parts of the state were fully restored by 9.52am today, after almost 15 hours of intermittent outages that began at 7pm yesterday.
Checks by Bernama found electricity supply in the city was back to normal by 10am after the city folks here had voiced their displeasures over the outages with some complaining it was this was the worst case they had experienced so far.
Some of them even remarked that the blackouts were rather untimely escpecially with the country about to celebrate Deepavali, the festival of light.
Sarawak Energy Berhad, the state power utility company, in a statement released at noon today said the Engkilili-Mambong transmission power line, which experienced tripped circuits at 7pm yesterday was re-energised at about 9.33am today, leading to full restoration of power about 20 minutes later.
Quoting their Grid System Manager, Yong Ying Poh, the statement said Sarawak Energy sent a team of technicians and engineers to the faulty line site but was not able to access the exact location of the fault due to poor visibility.
As an interim measure, the company used additional power from their Sungai Biawak and Sejingkat power stations to maintain supply was but not sufficient to restore power in all areas, the statement said.
"It was also necessary for us to use rotational load shedding, where we temporarily disconnect supply to some customers on a rotational basis to maintain the balance between demand and available supply," Yong said.
While acknowledging the public's frustration over the power outage, the company said they had initiated an investigation to determine the underlying cause of the incident.
