Sabah graft case: Three more suspects released on bail

Three more suspects who were remanded to facilitate investigations into misappropriation of funds involving projects worth RM3.3 billion were released today.

Sources close to the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) said they were a district engineer, divisional engineer and an assistant divisional engineer.

They were released before Magistrate Amir Shah Amir Hassan at the Tawau Magistrate's Court about noon.

"The district and divisional engineers were each released on MACC bail of RM200,000 without deposit and in two sureties, while the assistant engineer was released on MACC bail of RM50,000 without deposit and in two sureties," he said.

Sources said the three suspects were among 23 detained in phase two of the operation codenamed 'Op Water' since Oct 19.

MACC deputy chief commissioner (operations) Datuk Azam Baki when contacted, confirmed the matter.

On Oct 4, MACC launched phase one of 'Op Water' and arrested four people, including the director and deputy director of a government department to facilitate investigations into the alleged misappropriation of funds.

Following the arrest, the MACC also seized more than RM114 million and 127 land grants and jewellery.

All four were released on bail of between RM50,000 and RM500,000 each, in two sureties.

Following the interrogation of the four suspects, MACC launched the second phase of the operation after suspecting that many more officials from the department were involved. -- BERNAMA
