Same person in abused baby video in April 19 case

Police have confirmed that the video of a baby being abused by its mother which went viral on Facebook and the WhatsApp application over the last few days, involved the same individual in a case reported on April 19.

Ipoh district deputy police chief (Operations), Supt Anuar Othman said the investigation found that the suspect who was also the baby's mother, had made a separate recording apart from the one which went viral.

"There is no issue of a new abuse case reported. The baby has been looked after by its grandmother since it was discharged from hospital.

"A custody order has also been issued by the court with custody of the baby given to its grandmother. The baby has never been returned to the suspect who is its mother," he said in a media statement Tuesday.

The second video recording which is for 52 seconds, shows a baby being thrown onto a bed, shaken and thrown into the air by a woman, causing it to cry non-stop.

Anuar said the woman had been given counselling by the Perak Victim Care Office (VCO) and the baby was being monitored by the Welfare Services Department.

"The baby is in good health now and checks by doctors found no injuries to its body and head," he said.

Anuar said the investigation papers on the case had been referred to the Public Prosecutor's Office for further instruction and the case was being investigated under Section 31(1)(a) of the Child Act.

If found guilty, the accused can be fined not exceeding RM20,000 or jailed for up to 10 years, or both.

On April 10, police detained a woman, 17, in Ipoh, following the spread of the first video recording which went viral on the social media.

The 48-second video recording shows the woman hitting the chest and face of the child several times to get it to stop crying.
