Serdang DAP MP claims crackdown an act of intimidation
Serdang MP Dr Ong Kian Ming, who was called by the police to give statement regarding a report published in The Star, said the move is made to intimidate Pakatan Rakyat elected representatives.
In a press statement, Ong said he was surprised that the police investigated him under Section 505 (c) of the Penal Code which pertains to “statements conducing to public mischief”.
“I was questioned by the police in my office in Seri Kembangan over a report published in the Star Newspaper on May 20 titled “Take action against Kian Ming, voter told.”
“I had earlier, in a press conference asked the Election Commission to investigate whether a Chua Lai Fatt had been wrongly issued with a Malaysian identity card because he was categorised as a Chinese voter but his appearance, did not indicate that he was of Chinese descent.
“When I found out that Chua was adopted by Chinese family as a baby in the Klang area, I issued a written apology to him and his family.
“I was also surprised that the police took such speedy action to question me as there is no police report lodged on the matter.
Linking his predicament to the recent arrests of opposition activists, Ong said Inspector General of Poice (IGP) Tan Sri Khalid Abu Bakar, with the blessings of the newly appointed Home Minister, Datuk Seri Dr. Ahmad Zahid Hamidi, is conducting a coordinated effort to intimidate Pakatan Rakyat elected representatives.
“I am confident that PR elected representatives will not be cowed by these intimidation tactics,” he said.
