A single-mother serving a two-year jail sentence for dishonest removal of property was today sentenced to another five months jail for a similar offence, involving RM6,500.
Judge Zaman Mohd Noor handed down the sentence on Minah Anak Nyangat, 38, after she pleaded guilty to the charge.
The woman was ordered to serve the jail sentence from the date of her arrest, which was May 24 this year. She will complete her current jail sentence on Aug 14 this year.
Minah was charged with dishonestly removing RM6,500 belonging to a 21-year-old student of a public university into her Maybank account, despite knowing that the money was not hers, at Jalan Sultan Yahya Petra, Wangsa Maju, here at 10.05 am on Nov 14 last year.
The charge, under Section 424 of the Penal Code, provides an imprisonment for up to five years, or fine, or both, if found guilty.
According to the facts of the case, the victim had befriended an American by the name of Harding Scott on Facebook who told her that he would come to Malaysia to give her gifts and some money.
On Nov 14 last year, she received a short messaging system (SMS) from the man telling her that she had to make some payment to take the gifts that were sent to her.
The man gave her a bank account number and asked her to deposit RM6,500 into the bank account which belonged to the accused.
Following investigation, it was also found that the accused had also befriended the man.
Deputy public prosecutor Amira Sariaty Zainal prosecuted, while Minah was unrepresented.
