Sabah Deputy Chief Minister Tan Sri Joseph Pairin Kitingan says unity is an important element to maintain harmony in a multi-ethnic community in the country.

He said without unity, the country's independence and sovereignty which had been established thus far, would be threatened and might even vanish.

"Strong unity among the people is essential to pave the way for the prosperity of the country," he said when launching the Keningau district Kaamatan Festival, here, Sunday.

Pairin, who is also Kadazandusun Cultural Association (KDCA) president said the country needed strong solidarity among the people, irrespective of their race and religion.

He said a build-up of suspicion and dissatisfaction among the races could translate into instability and feuds which would be detrimental to all parties.
