Terengganu police committed to attain zero 'rempit'

Terengganu police will continue to intensify efforts to curb illegal street racing or ''rempit'' and are committed to attain zero ''rempit'' by this year's end.

Terengganu police chief Datuk Aidi Ismail said these goals were to fulfill the wishes of the state government to curb these social ills among students and youth.

"It is a major achievement to reduce the activity, if previously the Durian Burung area in Kuala Ibai was targeted especially at weekends until it became a nuisance to other road users,'' he told Bernama here today.

Prior to this, Terengganu Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Ahmad Razif Abd Rahman said almost 95 per cent of such illegal activity in and around Kuala Terengganu has been successfully reduced following the state government''s initiative to organise various activities involving motor sports at the international standard circuit in Gong Badak.

Aidi, who was appointed as state police chief here in April, said curbing illegal street racing would continue to be implemented besides enhancing the Community Policing Association (PKK) jointly with other agencies. - BERNAMA
