Indian Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi today jointly inaugurated the Torana Gate with Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak at Little India, Brickfields.
The iconic structure located at the heart of Little India is a token of friendship to the people of Malaysia by the government of India.
In his opening speech, Modi said Torana Gate is a milestone to both country’s relations.
“This is not something that is sculpted in stone but highlights rich cultural diversity between both countries,” he said.
He also said that if before people would throng to Brickfields for its delicious food, now people will come to see this iconic structure.
Najib, in his speech, also said that he is confident that it will swiftly become a tourist attraction.
“We have received a substantial number of tourists from India over the years but we most certainly welcome more.
“Malaysia is not just business-friendly, but also visitor friendly and I am sure visitors from India would soon feel at home,” he said.
The project which was launched on Oct 27, 2010 by former Indian Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh may have taken time to be built, but it certainly did not dampen the spirit of over thousands of people including Indian citizens, who gathered here today, to witness the historic event and to catch a glimpse of the popular Modi.
The Torana gate is identical to the design of the ‘Great Stupa’ at Sanchi India.
It has a height of 10 meters and a width of 7.3 meters.
The gate’s main structure is covered with sandstone sculptured blocks made in India and sent to Malaysia in blocks to fit the size of the Gate’s pillar structure.
Most of the carvings on the blocks are jewellery patterned floral and geometrical shapes.
Apart from the sandstone carvings, the gate also consists of granite slabs, bollard sculptures carved out of solid stone and low stone fenced wall.
