The Ministry of Transport intends to propose the installation of "speed limiter devices" in public transportation
to be made compulsory in the future.

Deputy Transport Minister, Datuk Ab. Aziz Kaprawi said, the installation of the device has been made compulsory on commercial vehicles; with consideration on the current frequency of road accidents involving public transportation such as buses.

He said this during a question and answer session held at the Dewan Negara here, today.

Through the Road Transport Department (JPJ), the Ministry has enforced the use of the speed limiter device in commercial vehicles from Jan 1 2015 for new model vehicles and in-production vehicles - it will be fully implemented from Jan 1 2017.

In response to questions from Senator Datuk Dr Johari Mat on the Demerit Points System (KEJARA), Ab. Aziz said drivers of commercial vehicles and public transportation who are involved in any serious traffic offence will be given a demerit point twice the demerit offences committed by private vehicle drivers.

He said, JPJ has developed a profiling system for vocational driving license (VDL) holders which involve public service vehicle (PSV) drivers and goods driver's license (GDL) holders, containing the record of traffic offences and blacklisting under the police traffic system.

"The application, in its printed form, contains information such as the demographics of the driver, the driver's license, suspension of license, blacklisting and a record of summonses," he said.

Thus, it is evident that the profiling system can address issues faced by bus and lorry drivers, while lessening the accident rate involving both these vehicles.
