UPSR leak: NUTP will not protect teachers involved

The National Union of the Teaching Profession (NUTP) insists that it will not protect its employees if found involved in the recent Primary School Achievement Test (UPSR) leaked questions case. Its president Hashim Adnan said the issue was serious as it involved the integrity and may affect the image of the teachers in the public’s eye. NUTP has fully handed over the case to the police for thorough investigation and proper action to be taken against those involved. "Teachers who are involved in public examinations, including invigilators and examiners have signed a letter of secrecy under the Official Secrets Act, and they should maintain the integrity," said Hashim. "Starting today no tuition centres or teachers should look for leaked or fore cast question papers. We in NUTP will conduct road shows to keep us away from this culture of looking for short-cut towards success," Hashim added. He also urged the public not to have negative thoughts on the over 400,000 teachers across the country due to this incident which only involves a handful of them. So far 14 people have been investigated in connection with the leak and 12 of them are teachers. At the same time, Hashim said UPSR was still require as a benchmark for determining the level of achievement of primary school children before stepping into high school.
