MELAKA: Tourism Malaysia is giving away e-cash vouchers worth RM450,000 via the Shop and Be Rewarded Campaign which will run from March 26 to 28, said Tourism, Arts and Culture Minister Datuk Seri Nancy Shukri.
She said shoppers stand a chance to receive a RM10 discount with a minimum purchase of RM50 at 30 participating malls nationwide.
"In 2019, shopping was the main contributor to domestic tourist spending with 37.8 per cent.
"However, the COVID-19 pandemic has indirectly crippled the shopping and retail industry last year, especially during the implementation of the first Movement Control Order (MCO)," she said when launching the Shop and Be Rewarded Campaign at a shopping mall in Bandar Hilir here, yeserday.
Also present were the state Tourism, Heritage and Culture Exco Datuk Muhammad Jailani Khamis, Tourism Malaysia director-general Zulkifly Md Said and Malaysia Shopping Malls Association (PPK Malaysia) president Tan Sri Teo Chiang Kok.
Nancy said the campaign, which was organised in collaboration with PPK Malaysia, was in line with the tourism recovery plan under the Economic Stimulus Package to encourage domestic spending and in turn revive the shopping industry.
It was also aimed at increasing the number of visitors to shopping malls that have been affected by the COVID-19 pandemic, thus increasing people's spending during the campaign period.
We will have the second phase of the campaign if it is well-received by the public, she said.
Meanwhile, Teo said about 2,000 business premises in various categories were involved in the campaign.
He said the campaign was an effective initiative in expediting the recovery of the retail industry in the country and hoped that it would continue to be held in the future.
