Don't be too emotional when debating, says Hishammuddin

There are no restrictions set for UMNO speakers to debate their motion at the UMNO General Assembly, but do bear in mind that their words are not only observed by party members but the general public as well.

This was the advice given by the UMNO general assembly's motions committee chairman, Datuk Seri Hishammuddin Hussein to all of the UMNO Supreme Council and party wings' motion spokesmen today.

Hishammuddin also reminded all speakers to not be too emotional and speak based on facts and rationalisation.

"If we are too emotional while speaking on racial, religion and policy issues, that can sometimes be misinterpreted as UMNO's stand. However, it is tough to control each speaker.

"Also be reminded that this forum does not only revolve around the representatives; many others are watching the UMNO debate," Hishammuddin told a press conference after briefing the motion speakers.

The Sembrong MP said UMNO deputy president, Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin agrees with him on this matter.

"With today's social media world, we can't restrict what is being said. It's better for us to be realistic in our stand, and work towards moving forward," said Hishammuddin.

The Defence Minister also expressed his happiness that the public were still interested in the UMNO assembly.

"If people don't care about our assembly, if they don't care about our debates being meaningful and valuable, it's a bad sign for the party," said Hishammuddin, adding that what is needed of UMNO is for it to be more inclusive, more open and democratic.
