The PAS Ulama Council is adamant in their stand to implement hudud (Islamic law) despite receiving resistance from its Pakatan Rakyat ally, the DAP.

Council deputy chairman, Datuk Dr Mahfodz Mohamed said the implementation was necessary as it is what the Almighty commands.

He pondered, why should PAS listen to DAP when it was evident that their ambition was only to takeover Putrajaya whereas PAS’ aim was to uphold Islam?

"Yes, we want to win but winning is not the only thing. The council is not entertaining excuses because we need to uphold the commands of Allah," Mahfodz said in his winding-up speech at the second Multaqa Ulama SeMalaysia at the MPSJ Indoor Stadium in Serdang Jaya Saturday.

Earlier, Kelantan deputy menteri besar Datuk Mohd Amar Nik Abdullah had reportedly said that the State would table the amendments to the Syariah Criminal Code II 1993 on March 18 – the same date as the Chempaka state seat by-election.

Elaborating on hudud, Mahfodz dismissed claims by certain quarters that PAS was hasty in its plan to enforce the Islamic law.

He said Kelantan had been striving for the laws to be implemented for more than 20 now; the amendments had been tabled and passed by the State Legislative Assembly in 1993.
