The prolonged MIC crisis can only be solved if the Registrar of Societies (RoS) steps in, said USM political analyst Assoc Prof Dr Sivamurugan Pandian.

“The crisis will go on as both camps will want to defend their seats. If the crisis prolongs with two leaders holding two elections, it will only give a bad image to the party,” he told Astro AWANI.

He said the onus is now on the RoS to explain to prevent further confusion.

On Monday, MIC president Datuk Seri G. Palanivel announced re-elections on a later date than the one his deputy, Datuk Seri Dr S. Subramaniam had set.

Palanivel said elections will be held from July 24 to 26.

Meanwhile, Sivamurugan said there was nothing unique in the RoS orders for a re-election in the MIC crisis as it had also told DAP to hold a re-election of its 2012 Central Executive Committee (CEC) election.

“We must go back to the RoS who must explain,” Sivamurugan stressed.

On Thursday, Dr Subramaniam claimed that the RoS had in a letter addressed to the party's Interim Central Working Committee (CWC) 2009 had declared that Palanivel was no longer a member following Article 91 of the MIC constitution.

He said the RoS had also recognised that Dr Subramaniam will function in the capacity of acting president to lead the CWC 2009 to conduct the party's re-elections as per the RoS decision.

However, Palanivel has refuted this, saying Dr Subramaniam was wrong to have misled people in saying the RoS had confirmed his removal based on Article 91 of the MIC constitution.

The article states any members bringing party matters to court without the CWC's endorsement lose their membership status ipso facto (automatically).
