Not wrong to have a young Opposition Leader - DAP lawmaker

It's not wrong for a young person to hold an important position, a DAP lawmaker said.

Commenting on PAS Ulama Council's rejection to have Nurul Izzah Anwar as the next Opposition Leader, Kluang MP Liew Chin Tong said age should not be a problem when it comes to leadership.

"What's the problem with Nurul Izzah holding an important position? Being young is not wrong... and to comment on whether someone is 'too young' is also is not a Malaysian practice," he told Astro AWANI when contacted today.

Liew noted that former prime minister, the late Tun Abdul Razak Hussein was only 29-years-old when he became the UMNO deputy president. Tun Abdul Razak was also the youngest Pahang Mentri Besar at the age of 33.

He said, DAP supremo Lim Kit Siang also became Opposition Leader when he was only 32.

Liew, however, refused to comment when asked if Nurul Izzah was the right person to become the new Opposition Leader, only saying that he is leaving the matter to Pakatan Rakyat to decide.

Yesterday, PAS Ulama Council deputy chairman, Datuk Mahfodz Mohamed had said the council rejected the the idea of making Nurul Izzah, who is PKR vice-president, the new Opposition Leader as she is too young.

The Lembah Pantai MP will turn 35 this year.

Mahfodz had said, PAS was throwing their support behind party president, Datuk Seri Abdul Hadi Awang for the post as he is far more experienced and has served his party for a long time.
