The opposition's failure to explain the hudud issue throughout the campaign for the Teluk Intan parliamentary
by-election proves that PAS and DAP are unsure of the stand to be taken to address it.

Deputy Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin said the issue had become a problem between the two political parties, whose views and stand differed.

"The differences in views and stand, which are quite significant, have caused problems among them," he told reporters after attending a meet-the-people session with the Orang Asli community in Dewan Kampung Orang Asli Erong here today.

"They must and need to explain (stand on the issue) but clearly they cannot explain it because there are significant conflicts in views between the two parties," he said when asked to comment on the opposition pact's campaign, which apparently barred its candidate and leaders from discussing and debating on the issue to voters.

Asked if Malay support for the Barisan Nasional (BN) was affected after DAP placed a Malay candidate, Dyana Sofya Mohd Daud for the by-election, the BN deputy chairman said the BN was not affected as it was ready to face any challenges.

"We are always facing anyone in an election. In an election, the voters make a wise choice on which party they want to vote and the candidate who is suitable...we are not being compromised because we do not take lightly any challenges that we face," he said.

Asked on the action of Seri Delima state assemblyman R.S.N Rayer, who had repeatedly condemned UMNO after the incident during the Penang state legislative assembly sitting, Muhyiddin, who is also UMNO deputy president expressed his unhappiness with the lack of respect and courtesy showed by the DAP elected representative.

"Although he can say whatever he likes, we have etiquette, discipline and that action will surely embarrass the party and himself.

"It is not appropriate for him to utter the word repeatedly even though he hates UMNO," he said.

He said history had proven that UMNO had done in terms of service when compared to the opposition party.

"If we have some matters that are unsatisfactory, actually there are courteous ways but this party (DAP) symbolises a party that does not respect other parties...this is a bad attitude of opposition parties," he said.

Asked to comment on the action taken by a group of Pemuda UMNO who forced their entry into the Penang state assembly after being unhappy with Rayer's statement, Muhyiddin said: "They should understand it is a natural reaction when challenged and will not be silence. That is the Pemuda (UMNO)'s attitude and spirit in always defending UMNO's reputation," he said.

However he said laws and regulations needed to be complied and UMNO was a party that supported the nation's Constitution.

"So that needs to be noted," he said.
