World number two men's singles shuttler, Datuk Lee Chong Wei and men's doubles pair Goh V Shem/Tan Wee Kiong cruised to the second round while Chong Wei Feng's run came to an end in the 2015 French Open Super Series Badminton Tournament at Stade Pierre de Coubertin in Paris on Wednesday.
Chong Wei who suffered an early setback in the preliminary rounds of two back-to-back tournaments -- the Denmark Open (last week) and Korea Open last month, kicked off his campaign with a winning start by edging hosts' player, Brice Leverdez 21-7, 21-15.
He is slated to meet either seventh seed, Viktor Axelsen of Denmark or Wei Nan of Hong Kong who knocked him out in the second round of the Denmark Open, in the next round of the US$275,000 (RM1,185 million) tournament on Thursday.
Goh/Tan, meanwhile, tamed Chai Biao/Hong Wei of China 21-16, 16-21, 21-12.
Chong Wei Feng who cruised to the main draw after crossing two hurdles in the qualifying round yesterday, failed to march further after losing 18-21, 11-21 to Japanese veteran shuttler, Sho Sasaki.
Malaysia's top women's doubles pair, Vivian Hoo Kah Mun/Woon Khe Wei, on the other hand, put up a spirited fight against third seed, Christinna Pedersen/Kamilla Rytter Juhl of Denmark before going down 21-19, 19-21, 10-21.
Amelia Alicia Anscelly/Soong Fie Cho, the 2015 Singapore SEA Games gold medallists, were also shown the exit after losing in straight sets of 14-21,16-21 to Chae Yoo Jung/Kim So Yeong of South Korea in the opening round of the same event.
Of the Malaysian players -- Tee Jing Yi (women's singles) and Koo Kien Kiat/Tan Boon Heong and Goh V Shem/Tan Wee Kiong in the men's doubles will kick off their campaign in the opening round, later today.
Malaysia's challenge in the mixed doubles event ended yesterday after two pairs -- Chan Peng Soon/Goh Liu Ying and Wong Fai Yin/Chow Mei Kuan lost in the opening round against their respective opponents.
