Gavin Kyle can still earn a ticket to Rio - PGM

Newly turned pro Gavin Kyle Green can still qualify for the Rio de Janeiro Olympics in Brazil if he maintained his current performance, said the Professional Golf Malaysia (PGM).

PGM chairman Tun Ahmad Sarji Abdul Hamid said PGM would make an announcement on the two players who will be on the flight to Rio, on July 11.

Ahmad Sarji said the country's top pro, Danny Chia, who is currently ranked 47th in the world, would only need to maintain his ranking and performance to earn a ticket while Gavin, who is currently 59th in the world, need to compete in as many tournaments to improve his ranking.

Based on the International Golf Federation's (IGF) requirement for the Olympics, only the top 60 players qualify for the Olympics.

"Barring any drastic changes in the position, Danny Chia is certain to qualify for the Olympics but Gavin's position is still hanging in the balance because he is currently in the borderline.

"He (Gavin) has three more tournaments to try and firm up his position by doing well," he told reporters here Tuesday.

In the Asian Development Tour tournaments like the PGM Penang Championship and Taifong Open in Taiwan, Green need to be among the top six to earn ranking points and in the Asian Tour like the Queen's Cup in Koh Samui, Thailand from June 16 to 19, he must finish among the top six.

Gavin who was the country's leading amateur player turned pro on June 10, last year and has since climbed the ranking list with a number of splendid results and performances.
