Harimau Malaya must defend title, says Zokples

The 'Harimau Malaya' squad must defend the AFF Cup title, said National Sports Council National (NSC) director-general Datuk Seri Zolkples Embong.

"As reigning champions, there's no reason for us not to set the target of defending the title.

"The results of our friendly matches were not very encouraging. Many doubt the ability of the national team ... I feel that many areas are in need of improvement.

"We hope they will show their mettle. The opening encounter against Singapore at the National Stadium (on Sunday) will determine how far we can go," he added.

Meanwhile, Zolkples hoped the crisis plaguing the Malaysian Weightlifting Association (PABM) would be resolved quickly to prevent it from affecting the preparation of athletes for international meets. The association was supposed to hold its annual general meeting in March but have yet to do so till today.

"If an election needs to held, so be it. Let the best man win for we are living in a democratic country," he said.
