Adriano Moraes was crowned the interim ONE flyweight world champion Saturday after defeating Tilek Batyrov via submission in a bout that lasted almost two rounds.
At the start of the main event of ‘ONE: Heroes of the World’, Moraes looked cautious as Batyrov comes hard with his incredible striking skills.
But the Brazilian managed to keep his distance and even took down his Kyrgyzstan opponent a couple of times before learning the latter’s weakness.
Moraes then attempted a few grappling moves to dominate Batyrov, until finally able to lock in a deep rear naked choke against his opponent to force the tap.
"Batyrov was good with his strikings, but he had many weaknesses on the ground. I have a black belt in Brazilian jiu-jitsu, so I just did my jig-jitsu," he told reporters when met after the fight at Cotai Arena at The Venetian.
Meanwhile, in a bout that shocked the Asian mixed martial arts scene, Martin Nguyen from Australia silenced Christian Lee from Singapore in round 1.
Having advantages in striking, Nguyen landed a handful of overhand punches and kicks to Lee, causing the 18-year old to go off-balance.
A left hand counter dropped Lee before Nguyen grabbed a hold of his neck in a guillotine choke.
Nguyen then dragged Lee to the floor where he put his younger opponent to sleep with Lee refusing to tap out.
