Setiausaha Agung Pertubuhan Bangsa-Bangsa Bersatu (PBB) Ban Ki-moon mengalu-alukan gencatan senjata selama 12 jam dalam konflik Gaza bagi membolehkan sukarelawan menghantar bantuan kemanusiaan.
Pada masa sama beliau turut meminta agar pihak terbabit melanjutkan tempoh gencatan senjata itu kepada seminggu bagi membolehkan rundingan ke arah keamanan yang lebih lama disambung semula.
Ban dalam kenyataan yang dikeluarkan oleh jurucakapnya, berkata berdasarkan rakaman imej yang diterima, penduduk Gaza berusaha melaksanakan pelbagai perkara sepanjang tempoh gencatan senjata yang berakhir Sabtu, termasuk mengebumikan mayat.
Keadaan itu kata beliau membayangkan betapa perlunya semua pihak terlibat mengumumkan gencatan senjata selama tujuh hari di Gaza sebagai langkah awal dalam memperbaharui proses politik ke arah mencapai keamanan yang lebih lama, atau setidak-tidaknya melanjutkan tempoh gencatan senjata kemanusiaan yang diumum tersebut.
Ban yang baharu mengakhiri lawatan selama enam hari ke Timur Tengah berkata sudah tiba masanya untuk semua pihak dalam konflik itu menamatkan perang dan mula berbincang.
Semasa lawatannya, Ban dilapor memberi penekanan akan betapa pentingnya pencerobohan selama 47 tahun dan kepungan ke atas Gaza ditamatkan, selain memastikan keselamatan berasaskan keperluan yang diiktiraf bersama dan mencapai penyelesaian yang membolehkan Israel dan Palestin tinggal sebelah-menyebelah dalam keadaan aman dan selamat.
Sementara itu, Agensi Bantuan dan Kerja bagi Pelarian Palestin di Timur Dekat PBB (UNWRA) melaporkan serangan terkini Israel ke atas Gaza yang didiami oleh 1.8 juta penduduk tersebut menyebabkan ratusan terbunuh dan ribuan lagi cedera, manakala badan bukan kerajaan (NGO) antarabangsa berkata jumlah orang awam Palestin yang terbunuh dalam kempen keganasan Israel itu melebihi 1,000 orang.
Lebih 170,000 penduduk kini berlindung di sekolah-sekolah UNRWA akibat siri keganasan terbaharu rejim Israel itu.
