Pakatan Harapan proposes to abolish GST in its Alternative Budget

Newly-formed opposition coalition Pakatan Harapan has proposed to abolish the Goods and Services Tax (GST) in its Alternative Budget for 2016.

The coalition also proposed to extend Bank Negara Governor Tan Sri Zeti Akhtar Aziz's tenure for an additional two years to "restore investor confidence".

Besides that, Pakatan Harapan aimed to put national sovereign fund 1Malaysia Development Berhad (1MDB) into administration - in other words, it will have 1MDB close down by selling off the company's assets.

With a revenue of RM208 billion, Pakatan Harapan tabled a deficit budget of RM30 billion.

This is due to the expenditure of RM238 billion projected by the coalition.

Announcing the details of the budget, Opposition Leader Datuk Seri Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail said the budget was designed to ensure that the people would not suffer.

"We do not want the rakyat to suffer because of government inefficiencies," said Dr Wan Azizah when tabling the 2016 Alternative Budget in Parliament here, today.
