BEIJING: China is strongly dissatisfied and firmly opposes U.S. visa restrictions on some Central American nationals over alleged ties with China's Communist Party, Beijing's foreign ministry said on Monday.

AI Brief
  • China dismissed US accusations of wrongful detention and called related measures baseless and malicious.
  • Beijing said its relations with Central American nations will continue despite US restrictions.
  • Trump's executive order could label states as sponsors of wrongful detention, escalating diplomatic tensions.

The restrictions cannot stop the development of relations between China and Central American countries, ministry spokesperson Lin Jian, who called the measures "malicious and completely baseless," told a regular press conference.

Lin also rejected accusations of wrongful detention when asked about U.S. President Trump's executive order paving the way for states to be designated sponsors of wrongful detention.
