9 things to do this Ramadhan & Syawal

Because we all need that little push. #stahp

1. Stop broadcasting Ramadhan messages.

Ramadhan

Let’s admit it. You haven’t spoken to half the people you send those Ramadhan messages to.Pick up the phone, give them a call and ask them how they are doing. Also invite them for Buka Puasa (and mean it!).

2. Stop going to Buka Puasa buffets.

Food(Travel Channel)

Over 100 dishes from 1,000 kampungs and 10,000 secret recipes? Do you have a stomach the size of a small apartment? If not, stay away from those buffets. Too many people spend way too much money, piling too much food on their plates – food that they will never eat. Why?

3. Stop complaining how tiring it is.

We are all tired from the lack of sugar in our system. That doesn’t mean one should use that as an excuse to sleep too much. Instead, do things you could never do before (because you have to eat lunch). Things like clearing your mailbox, mini facial and catching up with your friends.

4. Invite your non-Muslim friends to Buka Puasa.

Share with them the joy of Buka Puasa. If you can, invite them over to your house and eat together. Tell them in advance so they may save some space for those delicious homemade dishes and cookies.

5. Stop shopping like there’s no tomorrow.

Hunger makes you do weird things. Like killing your credit card with purchases you think will make your Aidilfitri better. No. Those sampins which cost as much as a small car will not make you a better Muslim, nor will seven baju melayus nor twelve shiny tudungs. Just use your baju melayu last year and change the buttons and the sampin. That’ll do.

6. Go all out at the Bazaar Ramadhan.

Bazaar
Hunger makes you do more weird things, like buying too much food for Buka Puasa. Those kuihs still taste the same and you don’t need five drinks of different colors to quench your thirst. This Ramadhan take the time to eat smart and not waste. And no, you will never eat it again during sahur. And for God’s sake, do not insta everything you have for buka puasa with tags like #tiljannah #barakah. Just eat and be thankful.

7. Don’t procastinate your Zakat Fitrah.

Why? God gives you 30 days to pay your Zakat Fitrah, which costs less that those five different colored drinks you purchase. Panicking at 6 in the morning of Syawal because you haven’t paid your Zakat is not cool. And it gets old really fast.

8. No, you don’t need new curtains and sofas.

Because no one wants to see them. We want to see you and not your curtains and sofas. Your friends/relatives/crush don’t really care if your sofa matches your curtains. Trust me, they want to see you and your family. A quick wash before Syawal will do. And no, it’s not cool to change everything just for Syawal and be in debt.

9. Do more than just Tarawikh.

Help people, be kind to people. No point going for Tarawikh if you skip on all other things. Sedekah, help the poor so they too can enjoy Ramadhan.

Having said that, enjoy your Ramadhan. Take this time to reflect on your sins.

(To save cost, you can also reuse this for Syawal and all other holidays.)
