Chiang Mai bus crash: Thai government hands over compensation to Malaysian families

The Thai government has handed over compensation to 13 Malaysians who were victims of a mishap involving a tour bus in Chiang Mai at the end of December, last year.
The representative of the Chiang Mai governor handed over the compensation to Malaysian Embassy's Second Secretary (Information) Leowania Leow Sui Yin in a symbolic ceremony in Chiang Mai on Wednesday.
Leowania, who represented Malaysia's Ambassador to Thailand, Datuk Nazirah Hussain, said the families of 12 victims who were killed received Baht1.9 million (Baht100=RM11.40) each, while the family of another victim received Baht1.4 million.
"The compensation money will be credited directly into the accounts of the next-of-kin," she told Bernama, adding that Malaysians who were hurt in the accident were also compensated based on their levels of injuries.
She said the Chiang Mai governor's representative expressed his sympathy to the famlies of the victims involved in the tragedy which killed 13 Malaysian tourists while nine others were injured.
On Dec 20, 13 Malaysian tourists were killed while nine others were injured after their tour bus plunged into a ravine after colliding with a pickup truck at Doi Saket, Chiang Mai.
