Floods: New relief centre in Mengkebang provides much-needed shelter for victims

KUALA KRAI: Previously, flood victims in Kampung Batu Mengkebang here, had to rely on the kindness of family, friends or neighbours, seeking refuge in their homes after floodwaters submerged their own.

However, with the opening of the Batu Mengkebang Resource Centre as a temporary flood relief centre (PPS) for the first time, it has provided much-needed relief for residents affected by the floods, sparing them the trouble of finding shelter elsewhere.

Mohamad Abdullah, 46, a local trader, said his home, situated near a river, is often at the mercy of rising floodwaters.

"When it rains heavily, the river near my house swells quickly, and we're forced to move. In previous years, we would stay with my father, since his home is on higher ground and safe from flooding.

"But this year, I'm thankful that the PPS at Batu Mengkebang has opened, providing us a place to stay without the hassle of searching for shelter," he shared with Bernama.

Fazzhana Aziz, 48, a Community -Based Rehabilitation personnel, emphasised the importance of having a relief centre close to the affected areas.

"Many people are forced to move in with relatives when floods hit, especially those living near the river. The opening of this centre has been a huge relief. The facilities are comfortable, clean and offer a safe haven for flood victims," she said.

The Batu Mengkebang Resource Centre is one of 221 centres across Kelantan, now housing 67 people from 21 families as of 9 am today, offering them hope and stability amidst the ongoing disaster.
