Former MACC officer fined RM10,000 for extorting cop

BUKIT MERTAJAM:A former Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) officer was slapped with a RM10,000 fine by the Magistrate's Court here today after he was found guilty of extorting a police officer three years ago.
Magistrate Sri Pracha Nanthini Balabedha meted out the sentence on Rommy Ma'i'aruf, 41, after finding that the defence had failed to raise reasonable doubt at the end of the defence case.
The court also ordered the man, clad in a blue shirt to serve a 24-month jail sentence if he failed to pay the fine.
On Nov 30, 2017, Rommy was charged with intentionally extorting and inciting fear in Ahmad Hasbi Mohd Fauzi, 35, who is the officer-in-charge of reporting illegal gambling activities in the Seberang Prai Tengah district.
The accused had dishonestly caused the victim who is an inspector attached to the Seberang Prai Tengah district police headquarters, to surrender RM3,000 to him monthly.
He was accused of committing the offence in the compound of the Seberang Jaya Petronas petrol station at about 9.30pm on June 8, 2017.

Deputy public prosecutor Muhammad Nazri Abdul Rahim appeared for the prosecution while the accused was represented by counsel Piyara Singh.
