Friday Fives: Car manufacturers who ventured into the world of K-Drama

Forget about that stylish coupe SUV in a world filled with dinosaurs and the hot-hatch in an acapella show. Watch these Korean Dramas that these four-wheeled eye-candies starred in! Recently car manufacturers have been venturing into Hollywood by signing on as sponsors for certain movies. IG: Mercedes-Benz has the most prominent presence in the recent hit Jurassic World and Volkswagen had the same presence in Pitch Perfect. But did you know that car manufacturers in Korea have been more active in sponsoring the K-drama scene their counterparts from Hollywood?

If you’re thinking of venturing into K-Drama, here are a few that would help ease your transition into watching the Korean Art of Comedy with a few four-wheeled eye-candies to watch out for.

Ford/ Lincoln – Kill Me, Heal Me

Ford and Lincoln has been the most active in sponsoring a large number of episodes this year. Instead of just one drama they did two dramas and both are high profile, expensive starring big-celebs projects. But their most active sponsorship was in the drama of the year, Kill Me, Heal Me, where models like the Ford Mustang, the Lincoln MK7 and the Ford Edge took precedence. And the important thing here is, the cars play a huge role in determining the characters in the show and are not just mere objects.

Here’s a fun fact: the second generation Ford Edge made its appearance in Kill Me, Heal Me even before the official launch in the 2015 Geneva Motor Show.

BMW – Warm and Cozy

BMW Korea decided to jump in with the sponsoring game with K-Drama world’s favourite writers, the Hong Sisters, leading their title. Warm and Cozy’s main premise was to promote Korea’s tourist island Jeju-do but the BMWs like the 5 Series, 2 Series Convertible and the i3 stole the show! Literally.

Peugeot – Sensory Couple

Even Peugeot joined in with the fray of sponsoring K-Dramas, surprising? Don’t worry you’re not the only one surprised. The Peugeot 508, the recent one that was launched in Malaysia, was the prominent car in the show while the main character drove around the quirky 2008.

Cadillac – Fated to love you

Yes, there is a Korean version of this popular Taiwanese drama and the one thing that caught every car lover/ K-drama watcher’s eye were the Cadillacs featured in the show. Taking centre stage is the XTS Sedan but the side-character-that-never-gets-the-girl drives around a blue SRX Crossover. Stylish cars for the stylish upper class!

Mercedes-Benz – You from Another Star

I’m sure you’ve heard of this drama even though you’re not a K-Drama watcher. Aired between the end of 2013 and the start of 2014, the drama was a huge hit internationally. The A-Class and the CLA 200 had been Mercedes’ stars of the show. This was also one of the first dramas that car logos were put on full display and there were interactions between characters and cars.
