Malaysian Bar remembers Tun Abdullah's legacy in judicial reform

KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia's fifth Prime Minister Tun Abdullah Ahmad Badawi's tenure from 2003 to 2009 marked a period of meaningful institutional reform, with the renewed emphasis on good governance, transparency, and the strengthening of democratic institutions, says the Malaysian Bar.

Its president, Mohamad Ezri Abdul Wahab, while extending the Bar's heartfelt condolences to the bereaved family, said among the former premier's notable contributions was his role in accelerating efforts that led to the establishment of the Judicial Appointments Commission (JAC) in 2009 - an initiative that promoted greater transparency and accountability in judicial appointments.

"This was a significant milestone in restoring and preserving the independence of the Malaysian judiciary, and one that resonated deeply with the Malaysian Bar's long-standing advocacy for judicial reform.

"Tun Abdullah's legacy also includes his emphasis on civil discourse, interfaith understanding, and a leadership style that prioritised listening, compassion, and respect for the rule of law," he said in a statement.

Abdullah, who served as Prime Minister from 2003 to 2009, breathed his last at the National Heart Institute (IJN) at 7.10 pm yesterday. He was 85.
