Malaysia's new COVID-19 cases surge to 24,316 with 64 deaths

KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia registered a total of 24,316 new COVID-19 infections in the last 24 hours.

COVID-19 cases in the country rose continuously for three consecutive days, taking the overall number of cases to 4,079,242 since the start of the pandemic.

There were four new clusters identified, with three involving high-risk groups.

Selangor has surpassed the 10,000 mark in its daily COVID-19 caseload, reporting another 11,692 infections compared to 10,240 the day before.

Meanwhile, five states had four-figure daily caseloads namely Kuala Lumpur with 2,425 cases, followed by Penang (1,577), Sarawak (1,400), Perak (1,324) and Kedah (1,252).

The other states reporting below the 1,000 mark were Johor with 986 infections logged, followed by Negri Sembilan (888), Pahang (631), Melaka (594), Kelantan (436), Sabah (436), Terengganu (430), Labuan (71), Perlis (90) and (84).

According to the Ministry of Health (MOH) there were 297 new imported cases, with 24,019 being local transmissions.

Based on the data from COVIDNOW, currently there were 247,603 active cases.

Earlier today, Health director-general Tan Sri Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah said there were 25,512 new recoveries recorded, bringing the total number of cured and discharged to 3,796,975.

Dr Noor Hisham said 6,019 were hospitalised, while 194 patients are on ventilators and 127 were under intensive care (ICU).

The country also registered another 64 COVID-related deaths yesterday, including 18 that was classified as brought-in-dead (BID). The death toll currently stands at 34,664.

As of Thursday, Malaysia has administered a total of 27,812 doses of the COVID-19 vaccines, with 84.1 per cent of the population having received at least one dose, 79 per cent have been fully vaccinated and 47.7 per cent have received boosters.
