U.S. Secretary of State in working visit to Malaysia

The United States Secretary of State, Rex Tillerson, will undertake a working visit to Malaysia from August 8 to 9, 2017.

This is his first visit to Malaysia since his appointment as the U.S. Secretary of State on February 1, 2017.

During the visit, Tillerson will also call on Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak on August 8 and meet the Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi on August 9.

Malaysia and the United States of America enjoy excellent relations with substantial collaboration and cooperation in many areas.

The United States was Malaysia’s third largest trading partner in 2016.

For the period of January to May 2017, total bilateral trade grew 23.3% amounting to RM68.2 billion (USD$15.4 billion) as compared with RM55.3 billion (USD$13.5 billion) during the corresponding period in 2016.

The working visit of the Secretary of State is an affirmation of the commitment by United States under President Donald Trump’s administration to further strengthen bilateral ties with Malaysia.

The visit will provide the opportunity for both Malaysia and the United States to discuss and exchange views on a wide range of bilateral, regional and international issues of mutual interest.
