KANGAR: Perlis Parti Warisan and Pakatan Harapan (PH) are fielding candidates with student status for the state seats in the 15th general election.

Warisan candidate for the Beseri seat Mohd Shamim M Nordin said his involvement in the political arena was supported by his father who is former Padang Besar UMNO Youth chief.

"Initially, I was not sure about contesting, but after seeing the changes made by Warisan president Datuk Seri Mohd Shafie Apdal in Sabah, I am confident that the struggle brought by the party will bring change in the state of Perlis," he told Bernama here today.

Mohd Shamim, 27, a Bachelor of Science (Human Development) student at Universiti Putra Malaysia who will graduate next month said he would go to the ground to attract veteran voters and use social media platform to reach out to young people.

Meanwhile, Mohd Syahmi Suhaimi, 23, the youngest candidate contesting GE15 is representing PH-PKR for the Tambun Tulang state seat.

Mohd Syahmi is a final year Bachelor of Civil Engineering student at Universiti Malaysia Perlis (UniMAP).

"I would be lying if I said I didn't feel 'nervous' to face BN political figure Datuk Ismail Kassim who is the incumbent of the Tambun Tulang seat.

"Young people should not be afraid to get involved in the country's politics because they will replace the country's leaders one day," he said.

According to the Election Commission (EC), as of Oct 9, some 198,784 voters in Perlis are aged between 18 and 39.
