KL Sports City to be ready for 2017 Sea Games

Construction of first phase of Kuala Lumpur Sports City is on track with 30 percent completed, to enable the National Stadium in Bukit Jalil to host the 2017 SEA Games.

Chief executive officer of Stadium Malaysia Corporation Azman Fahmi Osman said the new stadium will become an iconic building that all Malaysians can be proud of.

"Main works in National Stadium include a new facade that comes with light emitting diode (LED) lighting, new VIP lobby, upgrade of flood lighting, mechanical and electrical upgrades, and replacement of seats and resurfacing of running track," he told reporters at KL Sports City site, here Friday.

Malaysian Resources Corporation Berhad (MRCB) general manager Nalgunalingam Satgunalingam said they were working to complete the project within schedule.

"We are working 23 hours every day and seven days week to make sure everything goes smoothly as planned," he said.

Phase one project focus on regenerating the National Stadium, Putra Stadium, National Aquatic Centre and National Hockey Stadium and to improve the existing public transportation links, and increase pedestrian access across the site.

After the completion of phase one costing RM500 million and the SEA Games are over, MRCB will start phase two in early 2018.

The second phase will see the creation of Kuala Lumpur Sports City, a fully integrated sports hub that will consist of world class infrastructure including high performance training facilities, a rehabilitation science centre, a youth park, public facilities, convention centre, and a retail mall.
