Rio 2016: Liu Ying-Peng Soon win second silver medal for Malaysia

Tontowi Ahmad and Liliyana Natsir outclassed the Malaysian duo at the Paviliion 4, Riocentro, Rio de Janeiro early Thursday morning.

Malaysia's feverish hope for the first ever gold medal in the Olympics through badminton's mixed pair ended the duo crumbled in the final.

The Malaysians, who only won once and lost seven times to Indonesian combination previously, had lost 21-15, 21-11 to them in the group matches in Rio last Saturday.

However, all is not lost as the Malaysian pair bowed out from Rio with a silver medal with heads held high while a gold medal is on track from the men's doubles Goh V. Shem-Tan Wee Kiong in Friday's final.

Bernama reported that Datuk Lee Chong Wei is also on track to cap his Olympics unfulfilled dreams when he takes on China's Lin Dan in the semifinals, also on Friday.

Peng Soon-Liu Ying charted history when they qualified for the finals and their silver medal adds up to an earlier silver by diving duo Pandelela Rinong-Cheong Jun Hoong and and bronze by Azizulhasni Awang in keirin.

So far, Malaysia posted the best ever medal record in the country's Olympics history after clinching a silver through Chong Wei and a bronze by Pandelela in the 2012 London Games.

The national mixed pair made tremendous strides to reach the final after peng Soon first partnered Liu Ying Goh in 2009.

Two years ago, the pair went on hiatus as Liu Ying underwent a knee surgery to fix her aggravating knee and make a comeback after a 11-month break.

A year after being paired, the mixed pair won the Asian Championships in 2010 and went on to win two gold medals in the 2010 and 2014 Commonwealth Games.
