2020’s Autobacs Super GT Series has postponed its historic first ever night race due to the Covid-19 pandemic.
Originally scheduled to be held at the Sepang International Circuit from 16-19 July, HARO Sports & Entertainment Managing Partner Fahrizal Hasan said the event will now be deferred to another date which will be announced later.
“This is certainly not the way we had envisioned the return of the series to Malaysia after a six-year absence.
“However, a postponement is nevertheless critical to ensuring the safety and wellbeing of all stakeholders – local and international fans, spectators, racing teams, event partners, event vendors and event personnel,” he said in a statement Monday.
He said the postponement has also impacted the running of round 5 of the Series and the Super GT Malaysia Festival 2020.
“HARO Sports & Entertainment will continue to work with relevant authorities to closely monitor the pandemic and an alternative date will be announced as soon as it has been declared that the COVID-19 pandemic no longer poses any threat,” said Fahrizal.
In addition, the organiser reassured that all fans who have purchased tickets will continue to be valid for use.
The Super GT Malaysia Festival was launched earlier in March 9 by Ministry of Tourism, Arts and Culture Malaysia Secretary Datuk Dr Noor Zari Hamat and is expected to give a significant boost to inbound tourism.
The ministry has set a target of 30 million international tourist arrivals in 2020 through Visit Malaysia Year 2020 (VMY2020) campaign. However, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, its Minister Datuk Seri Nancy Shukri announced the cancellation of the campaign on March 18.
She said, the cancellation includes the freeze of all over-the-counter and online services for the ministry’s Tourism Licensing Division.
