Consider This: CEDAW — From Commitment to Action

Malaysia has been a party to CEDAW since 1995, but more than three decades on, translating that commitment into law and practice remains an ongoing challenge. With the latest CEDAW follow-up now underway, what does, and what should, progress on women’s rights actually look like? On this episode of #ConsiderThis Melisa Idris speaks with Dr Hiroko Akizuki, Member of the UN Committee on the Elimination of Discrimination against Women (CEDAW) and Melissa Akhir, SUHAKAM Commissioner & Women and Child Rights Advocate. The ‘Legislating Equality: CEDAW & Beyond — a Symposium on Legislative Reform for Women’s Human Rights’ was organised by the All-Party Parliamentary Group Malaysia (APPGM) on Gender Equality, Malaysia, Human Rights Commission (SUHAKAM) and the Bar Council Women’s Rights Committee (WRC), supported by the Australian Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade as well as Australian Aid.
