Dewan Bahasa dan Pustaka (DPB) is getting worried that a number of young local writers are being influenced by indie works.

Its Board of Governors chairman Datuk Seri Md Salleh Yaapar said this tendency could corrupt the Malay language.

"Lately this is becoming a trend which is a disservice to the Malays," he told reporters after opening a language and culture symposium in conjunction with the Ekspresi Puisi Dunia Numera (EPDN) 2016 literary event, here today.

According to Wikipedia, indie is a shortform of "independence" or "independent" whereby creative works do not conform to the mainstream.

The symposium was attended by literary figures from Indonesia, Singapore, Thailand, Brunei, Bangladesh, Belgium, Russia and Malaysia.
