I first stumbled upon a tech community event back in the 4th quarter of 2011. It was a hackathon, and one of my very first entries to understanding what technology startup ecosystem is all about.
Community building event functions as one of the main drivers to any startup ecosystem. Hackathon, as an example, is a wonderful platform for experimentation and prototyping of ideas.
The tech startup community is now more connected than ever. For every initiative executed, it contributes to strengthening the startup ecosystem.
A Malaysian early-stage venture company, 1337 Accelerator recently organized Transit On Tour with the objective to unearth tech startups outside of the Klang Valley. Selected startups stood a chance to pitch to prominent Silicon Valley super angel investor, Dave McClure (Founding Partner, 500 Startups) and other members of Geeks on a Plane.
As the country host to Geeks on a Plane in Kuala Lumpur, 1337 Accelerator, a collaboration between 1337 Ventures and Cyberview Sdn Bhd, also invited Geeks on a Plane to 1337 Demo Day.
Held on the 6th June 2013, the first batch of 1337 startups presented their pitches at 1337 Demo Day.
Among the selected tech startups include: iPrinz, an iOS app that allows you to create and send printed postcards; Infiltration Zero, single player stealth game on the IPAD; Braille Phone that is designed to help visually impaired utilize a smartphone; SocialMon (socialmon.co) that is targeted towards casual gamers who like pets; CatMoji (catmoji.com) a social network for cat lovers and more.
What is Geeks on a Plane? What do the organizer and members of Geeks on the Plane think of the startup pitches at the Demo Day?
Here’s what they have to say.
