Former Elected Representatives Council (Mubarak) hoped that more senior elected representatives would voluntarily make way for younger leaders, by stepping down from their posts like Tan Sri Shahrir Samad.
Mubarak president Tan Sri Abdul Aziz Rahman said the Johor Bahru MP's move is a step to put his dream into action.
“I hope more veterans like Shahrir who have been in service for a long time, would voluntarily make way for new faces because we need to rejuvenate the party.
“If the veterans have trained their successors, that's even better,” he said at a press conference after signing a declaration with 42 non-governmental organisations to express support for Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak.
Abdul Aziz also congratulated Shahrir for choosing not to contest in the next general election to give an opportunity to young people.
Yesterday, the 67-year-old Shahrir who has more than 40 years of experience in politics, said he will not defend his seat in the next general election as he wanted more young people to be involved in politics.
He had said that he cannot be like DAP’s Lim Kit Siang who ‘goes on and on’.
