Bersih 2.0 will organise peaceful rally, Bersih 5 urging immediate solution to the issues surrounding the government strategic investment company, 1Malaysia Development Berhad (1MDB) following the civil lawsuits filed by the United States Department of Justice (DOJ) last month.

According to Bersih 2.0 chairperson, Maria Chin Abdullah, details pertaining to the date, venue and how will be disclosed later.

“The focus now is to mobilise efforts to create awareness among the people on the impact of this issue,” she said.

Last month, the DOJ launched what it said was the largest-ever asset seizure case - worth more than $1 billion (RM4.1 billion) - under its Kleptocracy Asset Recovery Initiative, alleging that a total of $3.5 billion (RM14.35 billion) was misappropriated from 1MDB, a wealth fund established in 2009 by Malaysian Prime Minister Najib Razak, who also chaired the fund's advisory board.

The Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak recently disclosed that 1MDB was not directly involved in the DOJ report.

Datuk Seri Najib said the report did not contain any information from the Malaysian government, Attorney-General's Chambers or 1MDB itself. He said only those specifically named in the report were mentioned in the report.

Earlier this month, Attorney-General Tan Sri Mohamed Apandi Ali Attorney-General Tan Sri Mohamed Apandi Ali mulled over sending representatives to hold watching briefs at the hearing of the civil lawsuits filed by DOJ.
