Consider This: Sarawak’s Upper Baram — The Forest We Promised to Protect
A new report by the Bruno Manser Fonds has revealed how the Upper Baram Forest Area, which is a conservation project for some of the last remaining primary rainforests in Sarawak, was terminated, and is now the site of logging under a timber concession. On this episode of #ConsiderThis Melisa Idris speaks with Dominic Langat, Kenyah Community Member from Long Siut, and Celine Lim, Managing Director of SAVE Rivers, and Jessica Merriman, Project and Campaign Coordinator at The Borneo Project.
UPDATE: The Forest Department Sarawak has responded to the Bruno Manser Fonds report, strongly rejecting the report’s allegations and describing its account as “selective and misleading”. The Sarawak State Government says it remains committed to balancing forest conservation, socio-economic development and the well-being of Upper Baram communities.
